I’m not really a fan of Katy Perry with her unconventional sense of fashion and her wild and eccentric lyrics on her song “I Kissed a girl” (which still gives me creeps). I only took notice of her after watching her melodramatic Thinking of You, which I find her not cute, just irrisistably gorgeous. Russell Brand you are indeed the luckiest bastard in the world. And just lately I can’t get enough of her newest single Firework from her Teenage Dream album that is so perfectly timed for the New Year season.
The song is no doubt a winner, a surprise hit from 2010 – positive, uplifting and compelling. It is a fitting tribute to start the New Year. The message is aimed directly at lifting our self-esteem. The mtv portrayed only a few of the many dysfunctional classes of our generations; hidden gays, children with cancer, kids in abusive homes, struggling performers and fat kids all rising to the occasion. No wonder many people are coming back to listen and make it as their own anthem because we all have confidence issues of this and that. The song is catchy, melodic and produced to make every listener feel good. It is something we can relate to and at the same time to sing and dance with. Even the lyrics is not cheesy to mess up with the quality of the music (Cause baby you’re a firework.. Come on, show ’em what you’re worth).
There are many songs directed to uplift self-esteem like Christina Aguilera’s Beautiful, Kelly Clarkson’s Breakaway, Hilary Duff’s Fly and Miley Cyrus’ The Climb but Firework is a far better than all of them. Why? The video is way too cool.
The music video not only justified the song it adds more sparks to it. I love the special effects. By the way the video was shot entirely in Budapest, Hungary and probably not a single firework was ignited during the shoot. The team responsible for the CGI job, Radium/Reel FX, were able to create stunning photo-realistic fireworks that were used in conjunction with practical pyrotechnic effects. They used Houdini, a special and powerful software used for special effects and 3D animation.
Here’s some nice behind the scene images (from www.sidefx.com)
I am particularly amazed by the idea of fireworks bursting out of people’s chests. It looks somehow familiar with the ones seen on the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix fight scenes. But to see it on a music video is simply so beautiful to watch.
Katy Perry nailed again the MYX Hitchart and the rest of the billboards around the world this time reminding us that.. You just gotta ignite, the light, and let it shine.. Coz baby you’re a firework.
